TSC 'Majlis Al Jinn': Character Battle Images

Just sharing some battle artwork for my project. These images appear in the battle when it is said character's turn, the image is slightly stretched and returned to normal to make them appear to breathe/bob up and down.

These are all the main characters that appear in the party. Adam Sakuru (middle), Shannon (left), Joe (right), Trooper (bottom right), Cameron (top right) and Josh (top left).

--TSC: Majlis Al Jinn

This is one of my freeware projects I'm working on. A JRPG in RPG Maker VX Ace. I started it over a year ago, and have recently picked it up and changed it to make it more feasible to work on during my animation work.

--Character Design: Monster Practice

Just practicing some monster character designs. It's fun to think up and create random monsters.

--Artistic Development: Drawing Women

I want to become better at drawing women, because I'm not very good at drawing 'finer' things; capturing those smooth curves and elegant lines are something I need to work on if I want to have a female character appear more feminine. Here's a bit of my practice;

--Pixel Art: Finished NGN Title Card

So, my friend Andrew decided on having his intro mostly video edited, but was going to use the sprite I had created. Here's the finished title card he will be using;

--Artistic Development: Speed Paints

I'm part of a facebook group with the objective of doing speed paints/sketches to a theme. Here are a few of my submissions;

 -Bushido Rapper-

  -"SOUL SHOTGUN"-

 -The Arabic Ninja-

  -Pub Fight-

-A quick little value study-

The more of these I do, the faster and better I'll get. I just have to remember to focus on one thing each time I do one.

--COMA STATE: Boss Concept Art

Bosses galore! Some concept art for a freeware game I'm working on called Coma State. It's a side scrolling shooter that draws some/heavy inspiration from Gradius III. In it, you play a sentient being named Burai who travels into the dreams of those fallen into comas. By fighting and defeating the major nightmare inhabiting the persons dream,
the person can awake from the coma.

The shown bosses are Plamondon the Cannibal plant, Armaw the Angler Fish, Waluculican the Wasp and a major, unnamed boss.

--MONGOOSE SHOW: Semi-final/Final Character Designs

My friend Rick Rodas has been writing a show in conjunction with our circle of friends called Mongoose Show. I've been asked to animate it, as well as to assist with the character designs. I didn't come up with the initial concepts, but they all have some of my own creative touch to them.

Strat the Mongoose, Winston the Frog, Clive the Armadillo and Ari the Butterstick. These four strange buddies live together in a home where they are haunted by their dead landlord to make up rent each month. They can never seem to get their act completely together, but they usually figure out how to get by amidst their crazy and unnecessary misadventures.

While I understand model sheets were used in animation studios for the reference of the many animators to construct a character the same way, I need to understand the construction of the characters from the get-go. I view a model sheet as the experimental palette for character construction. If something doesn't work on a character, you'll most likely notice it at this point.

Sunday, October 6th, 2013.
Updated the designs. Here are some changes;

-Changed Winston to be more expressive, added fingers, but only kept it to three (including thumb).

-Changed the ears for Strat, as well as slight mouth/head construction.

-Clive needed an article of clothing to wear, but I wanted to keep it to something small/simple. Tried a headband.

-Ari's shade of blue was changed. This is because it was too close to the shade of blue Spongebob would wear in certain episodes of SBSP (at the beach, usually). Slight emotional construction in order to push moods more successfully.

--DAEERA: Animated Production Label

An animated logo for my production label. DAEERA is a phonetic reading of the word circle in Arabic. My alter ego character is Adam Sakuru, as sakuru is Japanese for circle, this was done to touch on both my circular character as well as my Arabic heritage.

Courtesy of Connor Harvey-Derbyshire for the music/voice & Bryson Montgomery for the sound effects.

--General study

Trying to understand the fundamentals of drawing has become a key focus of mine in the last year. This study was an attempt at understanding human form, anatomy and value/tone. I'll be starting a new study from fresh as I realized it'd be better for me to start dark and then work my way up to the lighter values. Using a thicker brush would also speed up the work and allow me to focus more on the bigger picture.

While I tend to draw cartoons/non realism more often than not, I think everyone needs to be aware of how to draw people. Artists that practice drawing things they aren't really good at will become technically more skilled in comparison to artists who don't. Gotta leave my comfort zone and make the world my comfort zone.

PS: I think all artists should self encourage on their own work!
